750,000 deaths in India linked to abnormal hot and cold temperatures
CONTEXT: The numbers connected to climate change are almost as staggering as our ability to do so little about them. This study report published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal demonstrates a clear link between non-optimal temperatures and increased mortality in India. What may be most surprising is that most abnormal temperature related deaths come from abnormally cold conditions rather than hot (655,400 cold compared to 83,700 hot). The authors clearly call for urgent change in the way the world is responding (or not) to increased global temperatures. With insurmountable research and increasing real-world evidence of the effects of climate change building ahead of the upcoming COP26 talks, the issue of increasing mortality rates due to abnormal temperatures are likely to be one of many prospects raised.
