Empagliflozin reduced the risk of cardiovascular events and hospitalization for heart failure compared to DPP-4 inhibitors in people with type 2 diabetes

CONTEXT:  Interim analysis of the EMPRISE real-world evidence study on Boehringer Ingelheim’s Empagliflozin presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions showed reduced risk of cardiovascular events and hospitalisations for heart failure compared to DPP-4 inhibitors  in patients with Type 2 diabetes.  The EMPRISE study included over 130,000 patients from Europe, Israel and East Asia and examined extensive endpoints across a broad patient population.  Type 2 diabetes significantly increases the chance of severe or fatal cardiovascular events, so this large scale study provides significant insight into the benefits of Empagliflozin across a wide patient population.
